Turkey has had a republican parliamentary democracy since the abolition of the Ottoman Empire in 1923. Mustafa Kemal was instrumental in the creation of this new Turkish Republic and was its first president.
The executive branch of the Republic of Turkey consists of a president, who is the chief of state, a prime minister, who is the head of government, and a cabinet, which is comprised of a council of ministers appointed by the president upon the recommendation of the prime minister. The prime minister is appointed by the president from among the members of parliament while the president is elected directly.
