The states with the worst poverty charts are Mississippi, New Mexico, Louisiana, Georgia and Kentucky, as of 2015. High unemployment, low wages, insufficient social services and high levels of homelessness are significant factors that contribute to poverty rates.
Mississippi has the highest poverty rate with 24.1 percent of the population living below the poverty line, including 33.7 percent of children. New Mexico ranks number two with 22 percent of adults and 31 percent of children living below the poverty line. Louisiana is third with a poverty rate of 19.8 percent. Georgia is number four with a 19 percent poverty rate. Kentucky ranks fifth with an 18.8 percent poverty rate.
