How do you steam shrimp?

To steam shrimp, begin by peeling and seasoning the shrimp. In a large saucepan, bring some water to a boil; when the water begins to boil, place a steamer rack into the saucepan. Place the shrimp onto the steamer rack, cover the saucepan, and steam for approximately three minutes.

In lieu of a steamer rack or a steamer basket, use a metal or wire mesh colander instead. Regardless of which steaming instrument you use, never allow the level of the boiling water to rise past the bottom of the instrument. Otherwise, you risk boiling the shrimp. If desired, add lemon juice and salt to the water rather than directly onto the shrimp. This results in a more subtle flavor.
