Because stem cell therapy is in its infancy, its safety in all potential uses hasn't been fully studied. However, early studies in which stem cell therapy were used to treat macular degeneration proved to be safe three years after the procedures were performed, WebMD reports.
As of 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is working on the development of laboratory techniques that allow researchers to ensure the safety and efficacy of stem cell therapies. Part of this process involves studying the biochemical processes involved in the manufacture of cells outside their natural environment to make sure they don't produce tumors or immune reactions, the FDA explains.
