Which strait links the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean?

The Strait of Gibraltar links the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. It takes its name from the Rock of Gibraltar, which comes from the Arabic words "Jebel Tariq," or "Tariq's Mountain." The strait is bordered by Spain, Morocco and Gibraltar, a British colony.

The Strait of Gibraltar is approximately 9 miles wide at its narrowest point. It separates the continents of Europe and Africa, with Spain to its north and Morocco to its south. The British colony of Gibraltar is also to its north, with the Spanish territory of Cuertas to its south. The Spanish cities of Tarifa and Algeciras and the Moroccan cities of Ksar es-Seghir and Tangier are situated along the strait's coast.
