The Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean meet at Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of South America. Cape Horn is located in the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego in Chile, and its face is a massive 1,391-foot rock.
The geographical coordinates of Cape Horn are 55.98 degrees south and 67.29 degrees west. It is regarded as one of the toughest maritime places in the world to round by ship or yacht. It is characterized by chaotic seas, gale-force winds, huge waves and icebergs, as currents from Antarctica, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans all meet there.
Cape Horn was discovered in 1616 by a Dutch navigator called Willem Schouten, who named it "Kaap Hoorn" after the city of Hoorn in his native Netherlands.
