According to Montana State University, the stroke volume of a normal resting heart in the average adult is between 60 to 80 milliliters of blood. The volume of blood pumped each minute is a product of the stroke volume and the heart rate.
Montana State University states that this volume is better known as the cardiac output. The cardiac output for an average person is between 4.8 to 6.4 liters every minute. During exercise, the cardiac output increases, as both the stroke volume and the heart rate increase. However, Montana State University states that once the individual's heart rate reaches above 40 to 60 percent of its maximum, the heart's stroke volume cannot increase further.
