The molecular structure of acetanilide is C8H9NO. Acetanilide is a stable, though combustible, solid that commonly appears as a gray or white powder. It is also known as N-phenylacetamide, acetanil and Antifebrin.

In the 19th century, acetanilide was used to synthesize dyes, rubbers and penicillin. It was also used to produce 4-acetamidobenzenesulfonyl chloride, which is a key compound for manufacturing sulfa drugs.

The experimental melting point of acetanilide ranges between 112 to 154 degrees Celsius, based on studies by Alfa Aesar, Jean-Claude Bradley, Oxford University and others. The experimental boiling point of acetanilide ranges between 304 and 305 degrees Celsius.
