The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally traditionally occurs during the first full week of August that follows a weekend. The inaugural rally, called the Black Hills Motor Classic, took place Aug. 12-14, 1938, during the Great Depression. At that time, organizers chose the first full weekend of August to ensure that the rally did not conflict with other events of social and economic importance already scheduled in neighboring communities.
