What are some substitutes for thyme?

There are a number of herbs that can substitute for thyme as an ingredient in a recipe, such as savory, oregano, marjoram or basil. In general, a user would substitute the same amount of one herb for another. In addition, it is possible to substitute dried thyme for fresh thyme, using 1/3 of the amount called for when using the dried herb.
Thyme, savory, oregano, marjoram, basil and similar herbs are known as culinary herbs. Other herbs in this category include bay leaves, lavender, mint, parsley, sage and tarragon. When cooking with fresh herbs, it is best to add them at the end of the cooking cycle so their flavor does not become muted or bitter.
