The Suez Canal is located in Egypt on the African continent. It is a man-made waterway that connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Gulf of Suez, a northern inlay of the Red Sea.
Construction on the Suez Canal began in 1859 by the Universal Suez Ship Canal Company, and it took a decade to complete. The project cost several millions of dollars, but the new waterway greatly benefited the world trade industry.
In the late 1800s, various power struggles over the canal erupted and continued through the 20th century. Debt and international conflict forced Egypt to yield some of its rights to control the canal. In 1962, Egypt obtained full control of the canal.
