What is sulfur dibromide?

Sulfur dibromide, or bromo thiohypobromite, is a chemical compound with a molecular formula of Br2S. This compound corresponds to two atoms of bromine and one of sulfur and produces a gas that is toxic to humans.

Sulfur dibromide decomposes into either elemental bromine or S2BR2, which is a slight variation of its original form. In water, it hydrolyzes into elemental sulfur, hydrogen bromide and sulfur dioxide. Featuring a bent molecular shape, it is similar to the compounds sulfur difluoride, sulfur hexafluoride and sulfur tetrafluoride. It is classified by the European Union as a corrosive, an irritant and dangerous for the environment.
