According to the United States Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry, sulfuric acid is found in places that manufacture various chemical substances, such as detergents, soaps, fertilizers and lead-acid batteries. Breathing the air near hazardous waste sites can also lead to sulfuric acid exposure.
As the New York Times explains, sulfuric acid is a corrosive chemical that can cause severe burns and tissue damage when it comes into contact with the skin or mucous membranes. Initial symptoms of sulfuric acid poisoning include severe pain on contact, breathing difficulty, burns in the mouth and throat, vomiting blood, and vision loss if swallowed.
