How often do the Summer Olympics occur?

The Summer Olympics occur every four years and are organized by the International Olympic Committee. Both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games take place at four year intervals, with the two alternating every two years.

The inaugural Summer Olympic games were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. As of 2014, the most recent Summer Olympics were hosted by London, England, in 2012 and included more than 200 participating nations. The next two events are slated for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Tokyo, Japan, in 2016 and 2020, respectively. In the history of the Summer Games, the United States has won more medals than any other country.
