Superbug infections, such as from carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae, are localized infections that exhibit different symptoms depending on the organ that is infected, according to MedicineNet. Symptoms that may make physicians suspicious of CRE include severe pneumonia, severe urinary tract infection, sepsis and septic shock.

CRE is an antibiotic-resistant bacteria found typically in the gut, according to WebMD. Those most likely to contract a CRE infection are those who are in long-term care facilities, nursing homes or are undergoing extended hospital stays. CRE has a 40 to 50 percent mortality rate; however, CRE infections typically occur in patients who have already contracted other diseases.
