What is a superficial burn?

A superficial burn is a mild burn to the top layer of skin, which might turn pink or red and be painful to the touch. These do not cause blistering and are commonly caused by sunburn or flash burns, according to the University of Utah.

Superficial burns are also called first-degree burns. Treatment for this burn is simple, normally consisting of running it under cold water if possible, applying a cold compress and using acetaminophen or ibuprofen for any pain that accompanies the burn. Superficial burns should not be bandaged to avoid irritating the skin. Normally, the area will be healed in 5 to 6 days with pain subsiding in approximately 24 to 48 hours.
