Endoscopic surgery is used to remove nasal polyps if drug treatments don't work or if the polyps are so large that treatments such as corticosteroid drugs are ineffective, according to Mayo Clinic. The surgeon inserts an endoscope, which is a small tube with a nasal telescope to remove the polyps.
Endoscopic surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, explains Mayo Clinic. Following surgery, the doctor may recommend saltwater therapy to promote healing and a corticosteroid nasal spray to prevent the recurrence of the polyps. Surgery is usually effective, but may be less effective in patients who have asthma or aspirin sensitivity along with the polyps, according to WebMD.
