Severe loss of movement in the toe is called hallux rigidus, according to Northwest Foot & Ankle. Podiatrists perform cheilectomies, or removal of bone spurs, when hallux rigidus is minor and arthodesis when joint damage is severe, states the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society. Interpositional arthroplasty is performed for patients with moderate to severe hallux rigidus who prefer to retain movement of the big toe.
