Is there a surgical procedure for macular pucker?

Surgery is used to treat cases of macular pucker only when severe vision loss interferes with life, states the National Eye Institute. During a vitrectomy, a surgeon removes vitreous gel that pulls on the eye's retina and substitutes salt water. Scar tissue that produced the pucker is eliminated as well.
Because macular pucker does not typically affect vision significantly, most cases receive no treatment, according to the NEI. Usually, vision is just a little blurry or distorted, and very small things are difficult to see. No remedies, such as eye drops, medications or nutritional supplements, are able to improve vision problems caused by macular pucker. In certain cases, vision improves on its own.
