Are there surgical remedies for hammer toes?

Surgical remedies are available for hammer toes, as the National Institutes of Health explains. Surgeons may excise parts of the toe bones, cut or transplant the toe tendons, or fuse the joint together.
Hammer toe surgery should be considered if the hammer toes are stuck in a curled position, if the person is having problems finding shoes that fit, or if the hammer toes are causing pain, irritation, sores or infections, advises the NIH. Hammer toe surgery may not be necessary nor recommended if the person can still straighten her toe, if she can wear shoes that alleviate the symptoms, or if padding and strapping treatments work.
