Does Medicare cover dental surgery?

Medicare insurance plans do not provide coverage for most dental care procedures, according to CMS.gov. This includes preventative care, fillings, extractions, surgeries and other dental procedures and supplies.
Medicare covers the costs of inpatient dental procedures that occur on an emergency basis such as dental reconstruction after an accident, states Medicare.gov. Medicare may cover certain procedures that are required before other, more serious procedures can take place, reports CMS.gov, such as exams prior to renal transplant surgery or heart valve replacement surgery. Tooth extractions are also covered if they need to be performed in preparation for radiation treatment due to cancer.
