Is oral surgery covered by Medicare?

Medicare may pay for oral surgery to treat a health condition that Medicare also covers, according to MedicareInteractive.org. For example, if a person needs surgery to remove a tumor in the jaw, Medicare may cover it. Medicare does not cover surgery that is primarily for oral health.

Medicare may also cover oral surgery if a patient has a fractured jaw or tooth from an accident, states MedicareInteractive.org. It may also cover jaw reconstruction after removal of a tumor or hospitalization for an infection resulting from tooth extraction. Medicare does not pay for follow-up dental care or routine dental care, but some Medicare Advantage plans may cover other dental procedures.
