A surprise lily is a flower named for its peculiar growth; leaves appear in spring, then die, and then the flower appears around August. According to the University of Illinois Extension, there are several species of surprise lilies in existence.
A surprise lily has amaryllis-like leaves that die out, after which a two-foot high stem appears. A collection of 6 to 8 trumpet-shaped flowers appear on this stem soon after the stem stops growing. Surprise lilies are easy to grow and are hardy in most areas; however, they are not winter-hardy. They need to have their bulbs dug up and separated every five years.
