What is the best SUV for gas mileage?

According to Consumer Reports, the most fuel-efficient SUV as of October 2014 is the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid. This vehicle gets 21 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway for a combined rating of 28 miles per gallon.

There are four SUVs that produce a combined rating of 26 miles per gallon, including two more Subaru vehicles, a Lexus and a Mini Cooper. All SUVs ranked in the top 10 reach at least 31 miles per gallon on the highway.

The most fuel efficient vehicles overall, however, are electric vehicles. The Mitsubishi i-MiEV SE is ranked No. 1 by Consumer Reports for fuel efficiency, with a combined rating of 111 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent.
