According to Consumer Reports, the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid rates highest in fuel economy among SUVs. The Subaru averages 21 miles per gallon in the city and 35 MPG on the highway, and its overall rating is 28 MPG.

Rounding out the top five SUVs in fuel economy are the Lexus RX 450h, the Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium, the Mini Countryman S and the Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium. Consumer Reports tests fuel economy using a precision flow meter and rounds the results to the nearest mile per gallon. The city and highway results are averaged to get the overall fuel economy. Hybrid and diesel vehicles are ranked together with gasoline-powered vehicles.
