What is a swamp cooler?

A swamp cooler, also known as an evaporative cooler, is an appliance that cools an area of low humidity by increasing the moisture content of the air. The heat in the area evaporates the moisture, making the area cooler.
A swamp cooler consists of a filter material, a fan and a water pump. Water is pumped to the filter material. The fan draws air into the filter, where it picks up the water. The fan then pulls the newly moist air through the filter and pushes it into the area. There are portable swamp coolers that serve a single room and whole-house swamp coolers that work through the duct system of a house.
