Is swelling after hernia surgery on a puppy normal?

Some swelling around the incision after a hernia surgery is normal in puppies and adult canines. However, agreen or yellow discharge combined with swelling and redness at the incision site may indicate an infection requiring veterinarian contact, cites the Humane Society of Huron Valley.
Post-op redness and swelling alone are not cause for concern, as long as the animal appears to be acting normal and has not lost their appetite. While the first few days following the procedure may also be accompanied by inactivity, crying, drooling or shaking, pets that appear to be in pain after this period also require medical attention, according to Veterinary Surgical Specialists.
