According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the symptoms of HSV-1 include tingling, itching, burning, open sores, fever and muscle aches. HSV-1 stands for the herpes simplex virus type 1, and it causes oral herpes.
The herpes simplex virus comes in two types. Type 1 causes lesions on the skin or around the mouth and is transmitted via contact with a person who has the virus. Type 2 causes genital herpes and is a sexually transmitted disease. Both types are viruses that stay in the person's body once they have been infected, states the American Academy of Dermatology. The virus can be reactivated in times of stress.
