According to WebMD, there is no current cure for HSV-1, also referred to as herpes simplex type 1 or cold sores. The virus is spread via infected oral secretions, and it remains dormant in the body for extended periods of time. Outbreaks are triggered by illnesses, stress and menstruation.

The American Academy of Dermatology explains that the HSV-1 virus travels from the skin cells into the nerve cells following the first outbreak. The virus remains in the nerve cells forever, and it can be spread to others at any time, regardless if the infected individual is exhibiting symptoms. In most cases, HSV-1 infections occur in infancy or childhood.
