Symptoms of vancomycin resistant enterococcus, or VRE, include back pain, pain during urination, fever, chills and body aches, according to Drugs.com. Other symptoms include difficulty urinating and redness, soreness or swelling around a wound.
A vancomycin resistant enterococcus infection is the result of bacteria that develop a resistance to a wide assortment of antibiotics, explains Drugs.com. The bacteria live in the intestines and on the skin and can cause severe infections anywhere in the body, including the intestines, urinary tract and wounds, notes WebMD. Although experts do not understand why it affects certain people but not others, they know that it spreads easily through casual contact.
