It is possible to control the swelling associated with lymphedema, but its effects are never completely reversed because the condition is incurable, according to Mayo Clinic. Lymphedema most often occurs when lymph nodes are removed or damaged during cancer treatment. Fluid backup causes swelling in arms or legs.
There are several types of treatment that help limit the pain and swelling associated with lymphedema, Mayo Clinic explains. Exercises that move the involved limb help drain lymph fluid. Manual lymph drainage, a specific therapeutic massage technique, removes lymph. Bandages, compression sleeves or compression stockings wrap around limbs to assist the movement of fluid toward the trunk. A special pneumatic sleeve periodically inflates to facilitate lymph flow.
