Aside from pain and discomfort, gas trapped in the large intestine or other parts of the digestive tract can also cause abdominal bloating, belching and flatulence, states Johns Hopkins Medicine. Certain conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, may intensify the effects of trapped gas.
While gas is a naturally occurring byproduct of digestion, individuals can increase the likelihood of excess gas by swallowing air when eating or drinking too fast, smoking and chewing gum, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Certain foods also produce more gas than others during the digestion process, including beans, cabbage, milk products, starches and those containing soluble fiber.
