Ocular migraine may refer to a migraine aura or a retinal migraine. The typical ocular migraine presents visual sensations and may occur with or without pain. A retinal migraine is more rare, more serious and requires immediate medical attention, according to Mayo Clinic.
Migraine auras cause temporary visual symptoms that affect both eyes. The patient may see flashes of light, chevron patterns, blind spots, and spots or stars that flicker, according to Mayo Clinic. The more rare ocular migraines, also called retinal migraines, ophthalmic migraines or monocular migraines, cause temporary blindness or loss of vision in just one eye, according to WebMD.
