What is an ocular migraine?

An ocular migraine refers to a migraine headache that is accompanied by visual disturbances, such as blind spots or flashes of light, according to Mayo Clinic. The term may refer to migraines with auras, which doctors don't consider serious, or retinal headaches, which a serious condition sometimes causes.

The less serious migraines with auras may also cause numbness or similar sensations in addition to the visual disturbances, states Mayo Clinic. These symptoms usually only last a short time and affect both eyes.

The more serious retinal migraines typically affect only one eye, according to WebMD. This type of migraine may occur due to spasms in retina blood vessels or issues with nerves in the retina.
