Symptoms of retinal or macular edema include wavy or blurry vision, or colors can appear changed or washed out, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. These symptoms can indicate a leakage of the blood vessels in or around the eyes.
As macular edema develops, it usually causes no pain and few symptoms, says the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The center of vision is usually most affected when macular edema symptoms occur. The peripheral vision normally remains the same while central vision becomes cloudy, wavy or blurry. Severe loss of vision or blindness can occur if macular edema remains untreated.
