What is a T1 MRI used for?

An MRI of the T1 area of the spine is used to determine if abnormalities are present in the area. Herniated discs, degenerative discs, arthritis, fractures, kyphosis, scoliosis and muscular problems are some of the abnormalities that can plague the area, according to Spine-Health.

While an MRI can be useful in determining some abnormalities of the spine, other tests are sometimes necessary. A CAT scan, a myelogram, an x-ray, and nerve stimulation tests might also be necessary, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center.

An MRI of the thoracic spine is usually done if a patient is complaining of upper back pain. It might also be necessary if there was an injury to the area.
