A magnetic resonance imaging machine is medical equipment that uses radio wave energy pulses and a magnetic field to generate accurate images of the structures and organs inside the body, states WebMD. Doctors use the machine to diagnose various conditions, including spinal cord injuries, strokes and multiple sclerosis, reports LiveScience.
During the procedure, a patient lies on his back on the MRI table, explains WebMD. The doctor straps the arms, legs and the head to help the patient lie still. The table slides inside the scanner, and there are several noises while the scanner works. It essential for a patient to lie still during the procedure, or doctors may prescribe medication to relax a patient.
