As of 2014, the tallest tree known in the world is 379 feet tall. Discovered in 2006 by Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor, the tree is a Northern California redwood named Hyperion.
The Sequoia sempervirens species of redwood tree can often grow to higher than 300 feet due to the favorable year-round climate and high average annual rainfall totals. There are other trees close to Hyperion in height, including Helios, measuring just five feet shorter at 374 feet, and Icarus, measuring 371 feet. Hyperion is estimated to be between 700 to 800 years old. Its location has not been released to the public for fear of vandalism.
