Tanning does not treat or prevent acne, explains KidsHealth. Tanning may temporarily hide the redness associated with acne, but tanning does not directly affect acne. Tanning can worsen acne by drying out the skin, says Today.com.

Certain acne medications cause increased sensitivity to UV rays, says KidsHealth, so individuals taking acne medications are cautioned against sun exposure. The recommended treatment for acne is to wash the face gently two times per day with a mild face cleanser containing the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide. Avoid popping pimples or blackheads because this only pushes the acne bacteria further into the skin worsening the condition.
