New York did not hold a tax-free week in 2014. Seventeen states, including Alabama, Arkansas and Connecticut, held sales tax-free weekends in 2014 as part of a tradition originally started by New York state.
Seventeen years ago, New York state began the sales tax-free tradition as a chance to give parents a break during the back-to-school shopping season. In 2014, all of the participating states held the weekend during the usual time frame of July and August. Most participating states restrict the sales tax break to back-to-school items, such as textbooks, computers and other school supplies. Shoppers are encouraged to learn the detailed restrictions specific to their state before shopping.
