A tuberculin skin test, also referred to as a Mantoux tuberculin test, is done to evaluate if an individual has been exposed to tuberculosis, states WebMD. TB protein is injected into the forearm beneath the top layer of skin.
Individuals with positive skin tests develop a rigid red bump at the injection site, reports WebMD. Further testing may be conducted to determine TB disease or latent TB infection, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A treatment plan is then formulated for the patient. Tuberculosis is a disease that is passed through the air. Symptoms of TB disease include cough, fever, night sweats and weight loss.
