Can you send a text to 911?

As of 2015, the Text-to-911 service is only available to limited areas in the United States; most consumers cannot reach 911 by text message. FCC.gov has a list of areas where the Text-to-911 service is available.

The Text-to-911 service is helpful to people who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability, or when a 911 voice call is impossible or dangerous. Federal Communications Commission rules dictate that users receive immediate automatic responses from their wireless providers informing them that the Text-to-911 service is not available if they attempt to use it in locations where that is the case.
