What is LTE 4G technology?

LTE, short for Long Term Evolution, is a fourth-generation wireless communication standard that was designed by 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) to be an easily deployable network technology that offers low latencies over large distances and high speeds for mobile devices like notebooks, tablets and smartphones. 4G LTE offers up to 10 times faster data speeds compared to its 3G predecessor.
LTE is regarded by many as the eventual successor of the third generation UMTS technology, which is based on HSPA, HSUPA, HSPDA and WCDMA. Aside from LTE, other competing 4G standards include WiMax and UMB (Ultra Mobile Broadband). LTE is the most popular of the three.
