The Spanish phrase "telenovelas de Mexico" translates to "Mexican soap operas" in English. Although the first word in this phrase translates literally to "television novels," most English speakers would refer to a program in this genre of television as a soap opera.

Telenovelas are very popular in Mexico, Latin America and the United States. In 2014, some of the most watched telenovelas were "El Color de La Pasión," "La Malquerida" and "La Que No Podia Amar." Telenovelas are typically melodramatic and often feature plots adapted from popular plays and other source material. In the United States, Univision is the top broadcaster of Spanish-language telenovelas.
