Why is the Tennessee State Prison in Nashville said to be haunted?
By Forinfos - 21/01/2026 - 0 comments
There is no specific event that explains why the Tennessee State Prison is haunted. It is thought however, that the harsh conditions of prison life when the facility was operational as well as riots, fires and prison breaks created a source for paranormal activity.
Reports of paranormal activity include doors slamming, voices and apparitions. Due to structural instability, it is no longer possible to tour the prison.
Built in 1889, the Tennessee State Prison was used as a film location for movies such as "The Green Mile," "Furnace" and "Ernest Goes to Jail." The prison housed inmates until 1992 when overcrowding became an issue. The state constructed a new prison to take its place and house more inmates.
