Do termites bite humans?

Termites are not known to bite humans, although a soldier termite has the capability and may do so if threatened. The threat of a termite is almost entirely due to its ability to damage building structures, crops and plantation forests.

Termites are eusocial insects notable for their division of labor that is similar to ants, bees and wasps. As consumers of dead plant material, termites feed on wood, leaf litter, soil and animal dung. Their ability to recycle plant matter and other waste is beneficial to the environments in which they live.

The termite queen is notable for her disproportionately large abdomen and is capable of laying between 20,000 and 30,000 eggs a day. Unlike an ant colony, a termite colony features a king whose sole purpose is to mate with the queen for life.
