What is a Texas alligator lizard?

The Texas alligator lizard is the largest lizard species native to Texas, measuring up to 25 inches long. It has large, platelike scales with yellow-brown to reddish-brown coloration and a flat wedge-shaped head. Its range extends from the Edwards Plateau in Texas to the west and south into Mexico.

The Texas alligator lizard lives on rocky hillsides and in wooded canyons, where it can hide in crevices. It is a slow-moving diurnal lizard that feeds primarily on insects and other invertebrates. It is not aggressive but may bite if handled. It may also inflate itself when threatened. The species is not protected in Texas and may be legally collected as long as the collector has a hunting license.
