When using Adobe InDesign, it is necessary to set the text frame to use inset spacing when applying a stroke to a frame filled with copy. This prevents the stroke from overlapping the text that was placed within the frame and making the characters illegible.

A stroke is an outline following the boundaries of a text frame, shape, text character or path. Inset spacing is a barrier of white space between text and the boundaries of a stroke. It serves as a margin within the text frame. Parameters for the top, bottom, left and right margins of the inset spacing can be set using the menu called text frame options in InDesign CS 3.
