What is TextNow?

TextNow is an application that allows phone users to obtain their own phone number. The app also lets users call or text for free throughout the United States.

The app was developed in 2009 by students attending the University of Waterloo. TextNow is the first all-Internet protocol, cloud-based mobile phone provider. The app can be used with a phone purchased from TextNow or it can be used on any device that supports it. Users can even log into other devices to use the free text and call service. The app is compatible with Windows, Android and iOS platforms as of September 2015.
