The theme of "The Drunkard" by author Frank O'Connor is a combination of seriousness and humor. The author's goal was for the reader to find humor in the main character's experience with the serious situation of alcoholism.

"The Drunkard" is a short story that feature's the main character, Larry Delaney, remembering the first time he got drunk with his father, Mick Delaney. Larry's mom had sent him to fetch his father from a bar to stop him from drinking too much. However, Larry's father didn't want to leave the bar, so he made Larry stay with him. When Larry does, he drinks his father's beer and becomes intoxicated and has to be carried home by his father.
